Why We Built Tech Race: The Inspiration Behind Our First Game

When I first started brainstorming ideas for my own board game, I wanted to make something that was more than just fun. I wanted to create something that entertained and educated, an experience that could capture a piece of the real world and let people learn from it. I sat at home, notebook open, jotting down every possible game idea that crossed my mind. But the one that kept resurfacing was a game about tech companies – a game that could bring the thrilling and unpredictable world of startups to life. And so, Tech Race was born.

Turning Experience into Gameplay

My background in business and tech has shown me just how dynamic the tech industry can be. The intensity, the constant race for innovation, and the high-stakes decisions are unlike anything else. I wanted to capture that energy and distill it into a game that would give players the rush, stress, and triumph that comes with launching and running a startup. This wasn’t just about re-creating a tech company in theory – it was about making players feel the pressures and rewards that founders experience every day.

In Tech Race, players must juggle essential resources – finances, talent, and timing. Each decision carries weight, with the potential for rapid growth or devastating setbacks. The game mirrors the volatile nature of startups, where quick thinking and adaptability often determine success or failure.

To recreate the fiercely competitive world of tech startups, Tech Race integrates player interaction at its core. Competing for customers, trading critical resources, and even lobbying the government in strategic partnerships add layers of depth. These mechanics encourage players to think critically, plan ahead, and adapt to the ever-changing dynamics of the game – all while staying one step ahead of their competitors.

Reflecting Real Industry Events

What makes tech startups so compelling to gamify? For one, they are incredibly dynamic. The tech industry moves at lightning speed, with trends and innovations that can make or break companies overnight. Tech Race is designed to immerse players in that environment. Just as real founders experience the high stakes of hiring, restructuring, and product development, players must constantly adapt to economic changes, competitive pressures, and unpredictable events within the game.

In building the game’s mechanics, I drew from key moments and trends I’d observed in the industry, such as the waves of layoffs in 2022-2023 and the rise of AI as a disruptive force. In Tech Race, players experience these real-world dynamics as they strategize their way through challenges that mirror actual events. By encountering “policy” cards that introduce sudden shifts – whether a new AI innovation or a market crash – players get a taste of the risks and rewards inherent to this field.

Building a Game with a Purpose

More than anything, Tech Race was built with a purpose: to connect people to the world of startups in a way that’s both educational and exciting. It’s not just about winning or losing – it’s about unraveling the complexities of the fast-paced tech industry. I also hope the game can serve as an engaging tool for parents to teach their teenagers about running a business, managing cash flow, and understanding how different functions work together. My ultimate goal is for Tech Race to bring people together, spark meaningful conversations, and perhaps inspire a deeper appreciation for the tech entrepreneurs who shape our world.
